Business Law Breakfast: OpenAI: Nonprofit in Name Only?

OpenAI, the entity behind ChatGPT, has been making headlines in the business and legal world since its nonprofit board fired founder and CEO, Sam Altman. Altman’s dismissal and subsequent return highlighted the tension between the nonprofit structure of OpenAI and Microsoft’s hefty investment in its technology, all against the backdrop of OpenAI’s potentially dangerous pursuit of AGI (artificial general intelligence). The OpenAI nonprofit/for-profit structure presents an interesting opportunity to explore nonprofit use of for-profit entities and the issues that arise in such structures.
