Students specializing in Business Law and Policy focus their studies on topics that prepare them for the “real world” of practice, whether in litigation or transactional work. After earning certificates of completion in the specialization along with their J.D. degrees, our graduates are ready to hit the ground running.
What sets us apart
Our innovative curriculum combines instruction in complex law and cutting-edge policy with in-depth, real-world skills training. From drafting and negotiating contracts to legal analysis of agreements, statutes and regulations, all of our courses are informed by a thorough understanding of the business client’s goals, objectives and obstacles.
Our world-class faculty recognizes that successful business lawyers do not just advise on the law – they help their clients plan, structure, negotiate and execute transactions. As a result, our students are taught how to analyze the business purpose and climate of transactions.
We are a leader in transactional skills training, providing our aspiring lawyers with a broad perspective on the issues likely to be encountered in their future careers and the tools necessary for effective transactional lawyering.
Moreover, we recognize that not all “business lawyers” are transactional lawyers. Indeed, in today’s legal market, many litigators also act as “business lawyers” and regularly counsel their clients in myriad business-related matters. For these lawyers as well, the training, understanding and insights offered in our Business Law and Policy specialization are extraordinarily valuable and set them apart from their peers.
We’re constantly exploring new and meaningful ways to prepare our students for life after law school, such as our recently introduced live-client clinic that gives students the opportunity to find real solutions to real problems with real people. Launched first in real estate law to rave reviews, another live-client clinic soon will be offered in corporate law, with plans to expand the program to all areas of Business Law and Policy.
Approximately 400 interviewers, including law firms, corporations, government agencies, and public interest organizations visit the School of Law annually. Throughout the year, these and other leading employers recruit for their offices in Southern California, New York, Washington, D.C., the Bay Area, Chicago, Seattle, and other major national and international legal centers. These employers hire UCLA Law students for summer or permanent positions as well as for part-time positions during the academic year. UCLA also participates in off-campus interview programs in New York and Washington, D.C.
